The four operators of Global Systems for Mobile (GSM) in the country namely, Airtel, Etisalat, Globacom and MTN have been slammed N1.1billion as penalty for persistent drop in the quality of their services to subscribers between March and April this year by the National Communication Commission (NCC). The NCC which is the government agency that supervises and regulates the operations of the companies hinged its action upon what it regarded as an infraction by the operators of section 104(a) of NCC Act, 2003 as well as as the Quality of Service Regulations, 2012.
While MTN and Etisalat's penalties are billed at the sum of N360 million each, Airtel and Globacom's are pegged at the sum of N270 million and N180million respectively. NCC furthermore directed that the fines be paid on or before May 21st, 2012 or be liable to pay additional N2.5million per day for as long as the contravention persists.
However, MTN has bemoaned the myriad of challenges facing them daily, ranging from vandalisation of infrastructure, multiple taxation, insecurity of infrastructure to failure of constant power supply. This, the MTN's Corporate Services Executive, Mr. Wale Goodluck noted and added that MTN spends billions of naira on diesel alone in order to generate power as 80% of power supply are self generated. He however appealed to the NCC to assist the industry to overcome the challenges besetting them.
