Today In History: Gen. Sani Abacha Dies.

8th June, 1998: Nigeria's 10th Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha died in office of poisoning.

Gen. Sani Abacha, who died at the age of 54, was born in Kano on 20th September, 1943, and was  commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in 1963, which was his official year of joining Nigerian military service after his education at Nigerian Military School and Mons Officer Cadet School.

He rose to being the Chief of Army Staff in August, 1985, a position which was preceded by Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida. And on November, 17th 1993, he seized the reins of power through the barrel of the gun.

His government, however, which was dictatorial was highly laced with human rights violations and corruption. Little wonder, today, being the memorial of his demise goes uncelebrated.
