President Goodluck Jonathan, amidst protests and criticisms against the renaming of UniLag, has sought the approval of the Senate and House of Representatives for the renaming of University of Lagos.
In a letter sent to the Senate President, David Mark two days ago, Jonathan wanted UniLag to be renamed Moshood Abiola University, Lagos. And in another letter to Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Jonathan sought for amendment to the law establishing the University of Lagos to reflect the new name.
It's glaring that the President is resolute on the renaming of UniLag despite the stakeholders' protests and vehement rejection of such act. This further gesture of the President walking up to the National Assembly to seek legal effect to his Democracy Day pronouncement smacks of anti-democratic attributes which shouldn't be imbued in a democratic President.
For clarity purposes, under the social contracts theory which is implicit in our political system, certain principles are fundamental. One is that, every citizen cannot rule simultaneously. Hence, they have consented, either explicitly or tacitly, to surrender some of their freedoms and submit to the authority of the ruler to whom powers are invested in to protect such natural rights. It is a contract between the individuals and the one in whom is vested powers; to surrender their rights on the one hand and on the other hand, for the one in whom is vested powers to protect such rights and act in the interest of they that he represents. Now, the question that eternally begs for answer is; "Has the President so far, adjudging by his current gestures, being acting in the interest of they that he represents; the electorates?
Finally, it should be noted that simultaneously with UniLag, the President as well sent two other Bills to the National Assembly to amend the statutes establishing two other Federal Institutions to reflect their new names. They are; Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike to be renamed Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and the Federal University of Technology, Yola to be renamed Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola.
