Jonathan Sacks NSA And Defence Minister.

Gen. Andrew Owoye Azazi.
Bello Mohammed Haliru.
Nigeria's President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has fired his National Security Adviser, General Andrew Owoye Azazi and Defence Minister, Bello Mohammed Haliru.

While Azazi will be replaced by Col. Sambo Dasuki, it is yet hazy who will take on the reins of defence ministry.

Col. Sambo Dasuki is a retired army colonel from predominantly Muslim northern Nigeria, as well as a cousin of the Sultan of Sokoto, who is considered the spiritual leader of Nigeria's Muslims.

Egypt's Parliament: Defying Court Order.

Following the constitutional court's decision to dissolve it, the People's Assembly (Egypt's parliamentary lower house) has indicated intent to hold its first session next week. The location is yet unknown.

Reproduced hereunder is as culled from allafrica.com 'The Wafd Member of Parliament did not specify the location where the council will be holding its session.

Dawoud told Aswat Masriya that his decision to take to Tahrir and protest against the parliament's dissolution and the constitutional amendments issued by the ruling military council is a personal stance that does not represent the party's official stance. He stressed on his utmost respect to all decisions taken by the liberal Wafd Party who held the biggest bloc in the Islamist-led dissolved parliament.

"Letting the Muslim Brotherhood endure the battle against the ruling military council alone is not in the interest of everyone - we will soon say "Verily I was eaten the day the white bull was eaten!"- the ruling generals must know that all political forces oppose its coup against the legitimacy", Dawoud said.

Head of the party, al-Sayed al-Badawi, had announced the party's respect for the court's ruling to dissolve the parliament, opposing calls to protest.'

Farouk Lawan: "I'll Be Vindicated."

Rep. Farouk Lawan, (PDP, Kano), suspended ad hoc committee Chairman on Oil Subsidy and Committee Chairman on Education backed the House of Representatives' stand on his suspension stating that if it'd been another member intricated in his travails, he would've taken the same stance with his colleagues.

Lawan however, exuded confidence that he'd get through and that God will vindicate him at the end of investigations. He noted this while attending a plenary session of the House for the first time since the scandal became public wherein he descibed his travails as a "trial from God".

Addressing press men at the entrance of the House, the beleaguered legislator pointed out, "I think it is important to note that I have been a member of the House of Representatives for the past 13 years. Of course, together with several other colleagues of mine, past and present, I have done so much to build the House of Representatives.

"The decision of the House of Representatives is a collective decision and I have absolutely no problem with that decision,"

Continuing, "I will be vindicated. I just urge Nigerians to continue to be patient, I have not spoken on the issue for strategic reasons; this last trial is a trial from God and I believe in the end we shall prevail."

Amidst the seemingly incontrovertible evidence, I still reserve a river of doubt as to the culpability of Lawan in the whole saga. I pray the real truth emerges ultimately and soon.

Nigeria Drops On Global Peace Index.

From its former 142nd ranking in countries reckoned less peaceful as at 2011, Nigeria has dropped four more points finding itself at 146.

As was published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, the index sought to measure peacefulness in 158 countries.

According to the report, the three most peaceful countries includes, Iceland, Denmark and New Zealand while Sudan, Afghanistan and Somalia are the worst with 156, 157 and 158 respectively.

The GPI further stated that Mauritius, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Ghana, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Lesotho and Morocco are more peaceful than Nigeria, and the USA which ranked 88.

This swiftly hurls my mind back to my primary and post primary education days when we receive the punishment of our life should we retrogress in academic results. Such punishments range from either canning, withdrawal of certain articles of luxury, denial of association and peer company and so on as parents' mood requires. But in this case, who should mete out any of such or other fitting punishment upon the country for retrogressing?
